Lan’Tejuana S. Cooper, PhD, MHA, RHIA, CPM

Division Director and Associate Professor
Division of Health Informatics and Information Management

Dr. Cooper is a tenured Associate Professor who received her Baccalaureate degree in Informatics and Information Management (Formerly Health Information Management) from Florida A&M University in 1998; and completed the Certified Public Manager’s program through the Florida Center for Public Management at Florida State University in 2002.  She received her Masters of Science degree in Healthcare Administration in 2004, and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Leadership in 2014 from Florida A&M University.  Dr. Cooper has co-authored the Health Law Chapter for the Professional Review Guide for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) examinations annually since 2010.  In addition, she has published in the Journal of AHIMA and the Journal of Health Care Finance.  Dr. Cooper has over 20 year of experience in teaching and training adults; and more than thirteen years of experience in academia, teaching foundations in health information management, legal aspects of health information management, quality management, professional development and coordinating clinical rotations and internships. She has experience in managing PHI in electronic format, and has developed policies and procedures on the implementation of HIPAA requirements, developed training modules for staff training, and designed HIPAA assessment and quality improvement tools.  She is an active member of the Northwest Florida Health Information Management Association, Florida Health Information Management Association, and American Health Information Management Association. Dr. Cooper is the recipient of the Florida Health Information Management Association’s (FHIMA) 2017 Educator Award and the 2009 AHIMA Foundation Merit Scholarship (Rita Finnegan Memorial Scholarship).  Dr. Cooper’s areas of interest include strategic planning and management, quality improvement and providing exceptional student experiences in academia. Her research interest also include training health professionals on how to increase effective patient-provider communication through the adoption of health literacy strategies.

Lauralyn Kavanaugh-Burke, DrPH, RHIA, CHES, CHTS-IM

Lauralyn K. Burke, DrPH, RHIA, CHES, CHTS-IM, obtained her B.S. degree in Health Record Administration from York College of Pennsylvania, an M.S. degree in Community Health Education from West Virginia University, and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in  Epidemiology from Florida A&M University. Dr. Burke is a tenured faculty member within the Division of Health Informatics and Information Management at Florida A&M University with research interests in healthcare disaster preparedness, implementation of health information systems, and epidemiology of infectious diseases and bioterrorism.  She is also credentialed as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and a Certified Health Information Technology - Implementation Specialist (CHTS-IM) and has worked in a variety of hospitals in management and consulting positions. Dr. Burke’s areas of teaching include health information systems and the electronic health record, ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding, healthcare reimbursement, management functions, health information privacy and security, and medical science. She is the co-author of the textbook Introduction to Information Systems for Health Information Technology, published by the American Health Information Management Association.  She also authors the Medical Science Chapter for the Professional Review Guide for the RHIA and RHIT Examinations.  Dr. Burke has several published articles in the Journal of the American Health Information Management Association and Online Journal of Perspectives in Health Information Management.  She is active member of the Northwest Florida Health Information Management Association, Florida Health Information Management Association, and American Health Information Management Association.  In 2018, Dr. Burke received the Florida Health Information Management Society’s Literary Award. 

Mitchell

Takiyah K. Mitchell, MHI, CCA

Assistant Professor and Clinical Coordinator

Professor Takiyah Mitchell is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Coordinator who earned a bachelor’s degree in Health Informatics and Information Management from Florida A&M University in 2011.  She also earned her Masters of Science degree in Health Informatics from Grand Canyon University located in Phoenix, Arizona. As Director of the HIT Program at North Florida College from 2015-2021, Professor Mitchell developed and directed a successful online medical coding and billing program offered to surrounding counties in rural North Florida. Professor Mitchell has over six years of experience in academia, teaching introduction to health information management, legal aspects of health information management, clinical classification systems, health information systems, healthcare reimbursement, professional development and coordinating clinical rotations and internships.  Additionally, Professor Mitchell has healthcare experience in acute care, specialty physician office and community health care center.  She is an active member of the Northwest Florida Health Information Management Association (NWHIMA), Florida Health Information Management Association (FHIMA), and American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).  As Chair of the FHIMA Consumer Engagement Committee in 2020-2021, she and committee members published “Telehealth During COVID-19” for publication on the FHIMA.org website.  Professor Mitchell’s interest is to create a student-centered environment where students can thrive.
